A typographic sculpture adds depth to Plaça Nova, right in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. Composed of six bronze letters and one of aluminium, the word “Barcino” honours the city’s Roman name, unfolding as a visual poem in front of the ancient wall. Joan Brossa, the creator of this abstract work, blends the material with the immaterial. Each letter, full of its own character, invites you to walk around, study and even question it from every angle.

This is good to know

It’s Joan Brossa’s personal alphabet, giving rise to one of Barcelona’s most replicated sculptures and turning the Roman name of the city into a playful arrangement of letters anchored to the ground.
This poetic installation, designed to symbolically demarcate the square in front of the city walls, is arranged diagonally, following the course of the ancient Roman road that once led into the city.
